Shama supports “I’m FINished WITH FINS”

by shama 31. March 2014 13:30

31 March 2014, Hong Kong – Hong Kong is the world's shark fin trade capital and a vast amount of shark fins is consumed everyday."I'm FINishes with Fins", a campaign aims to decrease the consumption of shark fins, is launched by WWF-Hong Kong, Shark Savers, WildAid, National Geographic, and Nat Geo Wild, and Shama proudly supports this meaningful event.

Hong Kong accounts for 50 percent of the global shark fin trade. The Hong Kong government has the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in protecting sharks, starting with adopting a no shark fin consumption policy for their own official events. However, support from the whole community is also needed. "I'm FINishes with Fins" is asking 100,000 Hong Kongers to pledge through an online platform (http://www.finishedwithfins-hk.org/#!pledge/c4om) not to consume shark fin soup, and educate the public that it is socially acceptable to say "no" to shark fins.

Please join us and pledge today. We can do more for our earth and environment.

Shama works with Feeding Hong Kong to alleviate hunger problems in Hong Kong

by shama 1. December 2013 10:20

11 November 2013, Hong Kong - To give back to our community, Shama recently has partnered with Feeding Hong Kong (FHK) to run “food without boundaries” program. It aims to alleviate hunger in Hong Kong, donate food item to people in need, and bring the awareness of reducing food leftover.

Despite relative economic prosperity, over 18% of the population in Hong Kong lives under the poverty line. This figure includes people from all walks of life, in every district of Hong Kong. At the same time, more than 3,200 tonnes of food is thrown away each and every day. This discarded food is not only taking up valuable space in our city's limited landfills but is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Our tenants and colleagues are welcome to donate their unused food, which could be one of any following items:

  • Rice,
  • Noodles,
  • Pasta,
  • Cooked Oil,
  • Canned Vegetables,
  • Canned Fish,
  • Canned Fruit,
  • Biscuits and Crackers, and
  • Milk

For food safety reasons, we are not able to use:

  • Rusty or unlabeled cans,
  • Perishable items (fresh food, bread or food requiring refrigeration),
  • Open or used items (including self-packed), and
  • Items past their expiry date

But any food items which meet the safety requirements are also accepted at any time.

FHK is the first Hong Kong food bank dedicated to rescuing surplus nutritious food from retailers, distributors and manufacturers and redistributing it to people in need. The task is to fight hunger in Hong Kong and at the same time reduce the amount of quality food that is being sent to the city's landfills.

FHK is an accredited member ofThe Global Food Banking Network, an international non-profit organisation dedicated to creating and strengthening food banks and national food bank networks.

It works tirelessly to raise awareness about poverty and food insecurity in Hong Kong and promote healthy eating and nutritional education to the most vulnerable groups in the community.

The supplies of FHK are given free of charge by generous partners in the food industry. Canned and packaged food items are donated because of approaching sell-by dates, labelling errors, discontinued brands, surplus inventory, minor recipe variations or damaged packaging. It also rescues fresh bread, sandwiches and salads that would typically be thrown away due to their short shelf life.

The food is sorted and delivered to partner charities. Each consignment is tailored to meet the needs of the individual charity and those that rely on it. By supporting existing food programmes, FHK makes efficient use of established distribution channels to make a difference.

More details of FHK can be found at http://feedinghk.org.

Shama donates blankets to Shanghai Young Bakers students

by shama 1. December 2013 10:00

8 November 2013, Shanghai – Shama has been working with Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) regularly including selling students’ baked goods at farmers markets. As the weather is getting colder at night, we have decided to take a step further by collecting blankets and comforters from our tenants and donated all of them to SYB students.

Started in 2008 by a team of 12 French volunteers, SYB provides a fully-sponsored French & Asian bakery training to disadvantaged Chinese youth. Due to the growing demand of bread on the Chinese market and the lack of qualified bakers, SYB graduates easily find a stable, qualified job after graduation and pull themselves out of the poverty cycle.

“Give an orphan some bread, you feed him for one day; teach him how to bake, you feed him for a lifetime!”

Initially six-months long, the training now lasts one year. In addition to bakery classes and practical internships, life skills and English classes have been added to further the graduates' career development opportunities. Since its inception, approximately 100 students have successfully graduated and a 6th batch is under way!

SYB is not only doing charity. By giving disadvantaged youth the opportunity to learn a valuable skill, they are empowered to lead independent lives and help others in return.

For more information of SYB, please visit http://www.shanghaiyoungbakers.com/home.
