The 1,764-km-long Grand Canal (about 1,200 miles) is the longest and greatest man-made waterway in ancient China. Ancient Hefang Street is a typical pedestrian shopping street in the old town of Hangzhou. The street is full of shops, selling locally made items, from tea to cakes, swords to chopsticks, mixed with sounds, colours, foods and souvenirs. In a Tai Chi Teahouse, there are six tea masters in one location, representing six generations. Visitors can watch the Kung Fu tea demonstrations and experience a truly authentic tea ceremony. Leifeng Pagoda is an octagonal five-storey tower with historical tales and interesting legends that have been passed on for generations. The tower is located on Sunset Hill, south of West Lake in Hangzhou. Originally constructed in the year 975 AD, it collapsed in 1924 but was rebuilt in 2002. Since then, it has been a popular tourist attraction.

Reputed to be the sister of West Lake, Xianghu Lake is well-known for its picturesque scenery and age-old history. Xianghu Lake Scenic Area is situated in the west of Xiaoshan District, about 20 kilometres away from downtown Hangzhou. It is the cradle of Zhejiang civilization. The discovery of Kuahuqiao Historical Site in 1990 has proven that Zhejiang civilization is about 8,000 years old. The 8,000-year-old canoe unearthed in Kuahuqiao Historical Site is believed to be the first canoe ever built in human history. In addition, it was also the battlefield of the warring states of Wu and Yue — two states located in the coastal area of southeast China in spring and autumn.
